This is one of Curtis Mayfield's lesser known but better albums and comes highly recommended, though it is hard to find, even on CD. It is neither as funky or orchestral as 'Curtis' or his big hit, the 'Superfly' soundtrack, but has it's own unique, wistful quality, with Mayfield in socially conscious, preacher mode. Billy Jack is a precautionary tale about street-life and gangsterism and is tremendously affecting. 'When Seasons Change' is a meditation on the transitory nature of success and pride. 'So In Love' is one of Mayfield's most tender love songs. 'Jesus' will even affect secular folk, reminding people to dwell on the spiritual, and 'Hard Times', better known in Baby Huey's rendition, and released by Gene Chandler in the late 60's as 'My Body House', is a vivid evocation of tough-neighbourhood malaise and paranoia. This is one of Curtis' finest songs, released (with string backing) as a single. Indeed, the lack of orchestration throughout, the relaxed pace, and Mayfield's falsetto gives the whole affair a fragile, bare-boned quality.
100% agreed! One of the most bluesy and melancholical albums from Curtis, a very underated work, though! Remind me, wenn Curtis in some interviews said, that he carried always some music of Muddy Waters with him. You can heard here some of that here, a very soul- and painfull down to earth black sound. For me, maybe his best effort, and a trully underated gem.
